Music at TLC
About the Teacher Mr. Brandon specializes in teaching children who are at the beginning of their musical discovery. He has completed a Masters Degree in Music from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. In addition to this he has spent nearly a decade studying Indian Classical music, two year of which he lived in Kolkata, India. His goal is to instill young people with a life long passion and informed appreciation for music.
In the Classroom Each week Mr. Brandon brings in a new instrument to share with the children. He uses these instruments to start a discussion about geography, physics of sounds, and culture by getting the kids to answer questions like: what country do you think this instrument came from; how does this instrument make a sound; how can we change the sound; and, how is this instrument used in it's own country?
Mr. Brandon builds upon the knowledge the children have gained throughout the year. He starts out teaching the children how to find and read the note G in the treble clef and expands out from there. He teaches them how to read and clap quarter notes and quarter note rests and then adds more complex note values. He teaches them about dynamics like forte and piano and talks about textures like staccato and legato.
All of these skills are reinforced with fun songs that engage the children in learning about music. One of the songs the children like to sing is "Old McDonald had a Band," where they try to recall as many instruments as they can and then imitate how they sound!
Individual Lessons Mr. Brandon teachs individual lessons after school at TLC on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. He teaches piano and guitar. He specializes in teaching young children ages 3 - 6 how to maneuver these instruments and have fun while learning. He uses teaching materials specifically designed for these age groups: 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6.
